Globe and Gate Valves

Conval is a premier manufacturer of high temperature, high pressure, and low pressure forged steel gate, globe, check, bellows seal and ball valves. Founded in 1967, Conval is an established supplier of safety-related and “N” stamped valves to the nuclear industry, initially under its 10CFR50 Appendix B program and then, since 2006, its ASME N/NPT program. In 2007, Curtiss-Wright Nuclear and Conval formed an exclusive partnership in an effort to provide enhanced support to the nuclear power, DoD, and DoE industries.

    Bellows Seal Globe Valves

    Bellows Seal Globe Valve

    Traditional packed valves require two different seals to eliminate leakage to the atmosphere; a 360° seal on the valve stem and a 360° seal on the stuffing box. The Conval Bellows Seal removes these two potential leak paths from the valve. The Conval Bellows Seal valves are used when packed valves may not reliably contain light gases and/or hazardous system fluids. The multi-ply Inconel® static bellows stem seal is more reliable than sliding stem seals. Conval Bellows Seal valves also have a secondary graphite packing system and a pressure actuated backseat to contain system fluids in the unlikely event of a bellows rupture.

    Conval has recently introduced a low pressure bellows seal globe valve for those applications, as outlined above, where leakage to the atmosphere cannot be tolerated.

    Principles of Operation

    The Conval Bellows Seal can be supplied with a manual operator, an air operator or a motor operator. The valve will open and close when actuated by the operator. The valve plug acts as a sealing element in the valve passageway to stop the flow of the process medium. When the valve plug is tightly sealed against the valve seat, the valve is closed. When the valve plug is away from the valve seat, the valve is open. Valves isolate (shut-off), switch, and control the flow of fluids in a piping system. These valves can be operated manually with levers, wrenches, and gear operators or remotely with electric, pneumatic, electro-pneumatic, and electro-hydraulic powered actuators.

    Manually operated valves (hand valves) are typically used where operation is infrequent and/or a power source is not available. Powered actuators allow valves to be operated automatically by a control system and locally or remotely with push button stations. Valve automation brings significant operation advantages in the areas of process quality, efficiency, safety, and productivity.

    Globe valves have a conical plug which reciprocates into and out of the valve port. Globe valves are ideal for shutoff as well as throttling service in high pressure drop and high temperature applications. Available in globe, angle, and y-pattern designs. Manual operation is accomplished through a multi-turn handwheel assembly. Multi-turn electric actuators are typically required to automate globe valves, however linear stroke pneumatic and electro-hydraulic actuators are also available.

    Conval Swivldisc Wedge Gate Valve

    By employing a flexible disc which permits the seating surfaces to achieve perfect alignment, the Conval Swivldisc® wedge gate establishes a tight seal not possible with standard wedge gate valves. The simple and effective pressure seal bonnet provides ready access for in-line servicing with no welds to cut or seal rings or gaskets to replace - repacking can be accomplished by swapping the bonnet chamber with the fresh pre-packed unit. The pressure-actuated backseat provides maximum valve integrity by ensuring a positive internal stop for the valve stem and disc assembly, and also extends packing life by securely isolating the packing from the pressure when the valve is fully open.

    By establishing a tight seal while maintaining repairablity, the Conval Swivldisc® wedge gate valve is the long term solution for gate valve needs.

    Principles of Operation

    The Swivldisc wedge gate design employs a flexible disc face which permits the seating surfaces to achieve perfect alignment, establishing a leak tight seal not possible with standard wedge gates. This is paired with the simple and effective CLAMPSEAL® pressure seal bonnet, which provides ready access for in-line servicing with no welds to cut or seal rings or gaskets to replace while maintaining the body-to-bonnet joint integrity through countless thermal cycles. Additionally, the Swivldisc® pressure-actuated backseat provides maximum valve integrity by ensuring a positive internal stop for the valve stem and disc assembly; it also extends packing life by securely isolating the packing from the pressure when the valve is fully open. The valve itself is able to pair with air, electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic Limitswitch actuators; single or double locking devices; and open, closed, or both position indicator stem shrouds.

    In extreme environments, the simpler the design and the fewer the parts, the better, and the Conval packing system delivers the best performance available under these conditions. The fine finish of the stem and chamber combines with high performance graphite packing to ensure long packing service life. The Axial design ensures tight concentricity, which eliminates side loading of the packing and minimizes wear forces on the trim components - a feature critical for superior gate valve performance. The durable single-piece stainless steel gland contributes to the longevity of the valve and, with integral gland wrench, is readily adjustable at any time. Repacking can be accomplished in-line by swapping the bonnet-chamber with the fresh pre-packed unit.

    Conval Clampseal Globe Valve

    Globe valves are linear-motion valves that stop, start, and regulate the flow of liquids and gases through process systems. These valves are precisely designed to accommodate specific ranges of flow control and pressure drops, which enables them to avoid premature failure and ensures optimal performance and service.

    The Conval Clampseal globe valve can be supplied with any of three of body styles, Angle, Y-pattern and T-pattern.  The rest of the valve stays the same, but the body style choice results in different characteristics and performance.  The Y-pattern body is also available with integrally forged Grayloc® ends.
